Brief History Of Owenego Inn
It was once one of the most popular summer resort havens on the Atlantic Coast. Visitors who traveled by train, trolley, steamer, horse, and carriage stayed for the entire summer in Branford.
The Owenego was the only antiquated left from the 30 resorts of Brandford.
The tradition in Owenego began in 1847 when David Lounsbury remodeled the Pond Family Farm into a covered wagon stop. The stagecoach accommodated exhausted travelers traveling between New York and Boston. He named the boarding house “Owenego” from the name of the son of the Montowese Chief.
He built the Owenego House in 1867 due to the increasing demand for overnight lodging. It is the very same Owenego House that serves as the Hub of Owenego to the travelers today. Jane W. Rosenthal, the matriarch of the Owenego, managed The O since the 1650s. Jane succumbed to demise in 2012. Then, her nephews and niece continue her tradition of welcoming guests on the coast of Connecticut. The O’s dedication to its members, guests, and community still stands charmingly.
