Brief History Of Garden Heights Weddings & Events

H.A.C. Taylor began purchasing farmland in 1882 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He had purchased 111 acres from Halsey P. Coon, which includes two residential houses, a grist mill, two barns, and two cribs. The 111 acres of land was locally known as “The Glen.”

Taylor and Moses continued to buy additional lands through 1909, accumulating over 700 acres of land. Then, H.A.C. Taylor moved out of Newport and resided in the Glen Farm in 1906.

They hired Russel Pope, a famous architect, to design the Glen Manor House. They completed the architectural plans in September 1921. The construction began in May 1921, after H.A.C. Taylor died. It was in 1923 when the house was finally completed, and the Taylors moved into the manor.

Reginald Taylor, son of Moses, sold the estate and 43 acres of land to the Sisters of the Sacred Heart in January 1959. Then, the Town of Portsmouth acquired the land in 1972. The Glen Manor House Authority now makes the estate available for special events.
